May is here and that means it is National Mental Health Month. Mental health issues affect all of society in some way or another.
Officials at Mahaska Health Partnership say you are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental health crisis than someone having a heart attack. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, in one year approximately one in 25 American adults experience a serious mental illness that impacts a person's daily activity in a minor or major way. Another study shows that one out of five children, ages 12 to 18, suffer a mental disorder at some point in their life. Because of these statistics, MHP says mental illnesses are common, but are treatable. If you are looking to help someone suffering from mental illness, or if you want to know the signs and symptoms, MHP's Behavioral Health Services offers free eight-hour classes. Class sizes are 15 to 30 people, pre-registration is required. MHP is also open to bringing either class to an organization or church group near you for free. To find out class times, learn more, or to register call 641-672-3159. |
